چکیده

The increase in container transport and the restricted capacity of existing port facilities determine a large number of issues, including terminal congestion, delivery delay, and economic loss. This motivates research activities aimed at studying the factors that influence performance and economic profit [1]. Toward this end, one has to rely on a model that represents the reality of container transport well enough to address problems from different points of view by using a suitable decision support tool. The various actors (e.g., terminal operators, terminal managers, shipping companies, forwarders, etc.) play their own roles and try to reach decision and planning goals, with either concurrent or conflicting interest. The main requirements for a decision support tool are wide-range applicability and generality, which allow one to plan a strategy or simply to manage a technical change. The increase in the efficiency of a container terminal by the introduction of new transfer machines (e.g., cranes, stackers or trucks) can be assessed with the support of simulations [2]. Similarly, the potential benefits of using automated vehicles to transfer containers inside a terminal may be analyzed via simulations [3]. Therefore, it is crucial to emulate the operational reality of a complex system like a transport network to predict the effects of changes or improvements in a terminal. A multimodal integrated transport network consists in a set of intermodal nodes connected by modal links (maritime seaway, inland waterway, railway, and roadway) travelled by specialized

Modelling Complex Intermodal Freight Flows

In regions with an extensive waterway network intermodal transport including inland navigation is a good alternative for unimodal road transport. Intermodal transport networks exhibit an increased complexity due to the inclusion of multiple transport modes, multiple decision makers and multiple types of load units. A discrete event simulation methodology is proposed to understand the network dy...

Optimisation of Intermodal Transport Chain of Supermarkets on Isle of Wight, UK

This work investigates an intermodal transportation system for delivering goods from a Regional Distribution Centre to supermarkets on the Isle of Wight (IOW) via the port of Southampton or Portsmouth in the UK. We consider this integrated logistics chain as a 3-echelon transportation system. In such a system, there are two types of transport methods used to deliver goods across the Solent Chan...

An Efficient Genetic Algorithm to Solve the Intermodal Terminal Location problem

The exponential growth of the flow of goods and passengers, fragility of certain products and the need for the optimization of transport costs impose on carriers to use more and more multimodal transport. In addition, the need for intermodal transport policy has been strongly driven by environmental concerns and to benefit from the combination of different modes of transport to cope with the in...

Modelling Corridor Networks in Intermodal Barge Transport

In this paper the design of the service network in intermodal barge transport is studied. The network of inland barge terminals is modeled to demonstrate potential cooperations in a corridor network. Cooperation between inland terminals leads to bundling of freight flows in the hinterland of major ports. A service network design methodology for intermodal barge transport is developed and applie...

An Intercompany Dispatch Support System for Intermodal Transport Chains

A critical problem in an intermodal transport chain is the direct meet at the transhipment nodes. This requires information technology and modern communication facilities as well as close collaboration between all the concerned transport operators in the chain. The TELETRUCK system – currently under development at the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) – is a dispatch sup...
